Large International Law Firm uses virtualization technology to reduce servers

Request:

A large international law firm hoped to save thousands of dollars over the next three years by consolidating its server infrastructure using virtualization technology.

Solution:

Like many companies the company found itself buying more and more servers to host new applications for the business, a trend it has managed to reverse since implementing the Virtuosso Server virtualization software.

The software allows the company to run many different virtual servers on the same physical servers, reducing management time and investment in new hardware. The firm was able to achieve a 10:1 virtual to physical machine consolidation ratio. The technology also allows the IT department to provide servers faster when they are needed by the business. Previously it took up to three weeks to have a server ready for a new application. The IT systems engineers can now generate a new virtual server in as little as three hours. This has been a significant step.

Benefits:

The move to virtualize has met their the following goals:

- Server consolidation
- Rapid deployment
- reduction in time spent to test new platforms
- Dynamic Load Blancing
- Disaster Recovery improvements

Regional Home Health Care Provider requires office relocation & Terminal Services solution

Request:

This regional Home Health Care provider needed to relocate their central office to larger purpose built premises, and wanted to take the opportunity to implement a more scaleable network infrastructure with improved network management capability. They specifically wanted to have greater control on workstation usage and provide access to a number of remote users.

Solution:

Byte Networking was able to provide the necessary resources to relocate the IT systems to the new premises, ensuring that application servers, file servers, internet access and e-mail services remained uninterrupted.

In conjunction with the re-location project Byte Networking designed, supplied and configured a Thin Client solution based on Microsoft Terminal Services. With many of the workstations needing to be replaced or upgraded, we were able to substitute many for Thin Client Terminals; retaining PCs for a small number of users with specific applications requiring them. Mobile user VPN links were established for remote users and a Branch Office VPN was created to the central office.

Benefits:

The resulting system has allowed nearly every desktop client to be managed centrally, ensuring that there is consistency of application availability and versions for all users. It also allows greater flexibility for users to access their own desktop from multiple locations without the need for more complex roaming profiles to be configured. Remote users and those situated at the branch offices can now have fast access to unified and centrally located information eliminating the problems of disparate databases and file revisions.

International Marketing Organization seeks to Centralize their file systems.

Request:

Centralize their remote file servers. With the number of offices increasing email became the primary method for exchanging large image files as well as office related files. Another problem was that many of these files had multiple revisions and were rarely backed up centrally. Trying access these files over high-latency WAN links proved frustrating for end users and unstable as the amount of data increased.

Solution:

Byte Networking was retained to find a solution. Availl's Wide Area Network file system was chosen as the most comphensive solution to the problem. They wanted a way to centralize all their files, back them up and reduce the high load times when opening files across a WAN link.

Availl allowed these distant offices to work on and share the exact same data in real time. Availl enabled them to share rapidly changing files across the world and have a guaranteed single file version.

Benefits:

* Any change is immediately mirrored to the files at the other sites and is totally transparently.
* Access is instant because users open a copy of the file on the local server.
* Every user sees the same files, no matter where the user is.
* Availl delivers real-time coherency- only 1 person can make changes to a file at any time.
* Availl sends only the changes, not the whole file. This significantly reduces bandwidth needs.
* It is real time 24x7 and in the background.
* Employees take no action to share information.
* All users have access to files even with WAN outage.

Regional Nursing Home Organization requires emergency mail server rebuild

Request:

The Exchange Mail Server for a large health care provider failed during business hours. This caused chaos for the firm, which relies extensively on e-mail for transmission of physician data, patient data and claims. It was imperative that the company’s mail server be diagnosed, repaired and restored immediately. Unfortunately, the company estimated that it would take a minimum of one week to rebuild and restore the affected data.

Solution:

The company retained Byte Networking, which immediately deployed a quick-response team. The Byte Networking team arrived on the scene and determined that the server failed because of a serious problem with the RAID array.

In a single day, Byte Networking:

* recovered all mail files
* rebuilt the company’s server
* restored affected data
* verified against past results
* certified the server to be fully functional

Benefits:

Rather than restoring e-mail in a week as expected, the company was back up and running with full functionality in less than 24 hours. What’s more, all lost data was completely recovered.
